OUR STRUGGLE: speaking up, singing loud

'When we came onto the streets in protest, they shot at us. But nobody can stop us singing. And the struggle is in our song.' - Prince Peter Prince played club football, made music and cut hair for a living. He was born in Fisherman estate and when that was demolished in 1985, moved with his family to Njemanze waterfront. On 28 August, 2009, the wooden shack he built there was bulldozed with all his possessions inside. Since then Prince has been working full time with Chicoco Cinema and Chicoco Radio as a community organiser and as a photographer. Prince is documenting the programme and once the station is afloat and on air, Prince will be one of the station technicians. Help keep us afloat and get us on air.

De... read more

WILD SOUND: out of the studio and onto the streets

'A microphone in the hand; an idea in the head; a new sound for the city' - DJ Murphy I'm making my first sound piece. I wanted to catch some of the flavour and rhythm of the streets. Every home here spills into the street - small stalls selling fruit, vegetables, soaps, torches, trinkets and flip flops; there's football on every corner. The everyday sounds of the street sound new through the headphones. I'll share the piece as soon as it's ready. The government told us they were going to demolish all these streets. With our community radio station we'll be able to speak out and speak up for ourselves. Listen to this space.
