In November the construction of 2 classrooms for the Japata Secondary School has started. One of the classrooms will be set up as the first ICT center in a school in Mount Elgon. Target is to complete the building early 2012. After that the computers will be installed. This is the first of multiple similar centers that will connect our schools to the world!
Situation
Mount Elgon is based in Western Kenya, 40km from Kitale town. The area inhabits more than 50.000 people of whom the majority are substistence farmers or farm employees. Extreme poverty is evident, and 6-10% of the population is infected with HIV/AIDS. Malaria is omnipresent. The area is deprived from proper infrastructure in the field of health care, education, transport, electricity and communication. The average life expectation is 50 years. A local fair trade flower farm, named Mount Elgon Orchards, has initiated several welfare projects in the area as part of their social responsibility. The Elimu Mount Elgon Foundation supports these projects. Both the Elimu Mount Elgon Foundation is a small scale, highly focussed foundation with a direct contribution to local success.Goal
The overall goal of the foundation is to support welfare projects for eduction and professional training in the Mount Elgon Region. The main next challenge to be realized within the scope of this goal is setting up a guest house as part of a Development Village that has been constructed, providing healthy living, on-going learning and care.Main activities
The foundation supports realization of very tangible projects. So far, the following has been realized with support of the Foundation : Construction of Secondary school for 320 students, 3 new Classrooms and staffbuilding for Chepchoina Primary School, renovation of 3 classrooms, Construction of Anderen Nursery School (180 pre-school childs), donation of primary school study materials, scholarships, schoolfurniture, setup of libraries, construction of chemics-class. The foundation organizes multiple fundraising events in the Netherlands, like an annual Charity diner, bridge drive, golf tournament, running a second hand-clothing shop and much more.
