Mama Alice
About charity
The name Alice, founder Fréderique's mum, symbolizes the structure, safety and warmth of a mother that street children so desperately need. Mama Alice runs on passion but with structure and a solid foundation. End 2010 Mama Alice helped over 800 children with a team of 35 people. We are a humanitarian organization independent of religion, politics or belief. By using 3 main pillars, education, welfare and vocational training, we want to give street children a better future.
Emy Kallen visits Ayacucho
During my vacation in Ayacucho last Februar Angela, the coordinator of Mama Alice gave me a letter with the question if I'd like te become the godmother of the 11 de Junio chamber. This is one of the class rooms which has been restored recently. By the donations of the students of Global Exploration and the double amount of Wilde Gansen we build a new roof. Of course I said yes.

Frederique winner Grahame Maher Award!
After being selected out of 20 national winners, Frederique reached the finals together with 2 other finalists. She was able to convince the Vodafone jury of the necessity of the Chat & Call project. By winning this price she recieved 100.000 pounds to start the new project. Mama Alice is very proud of this performance and hopes to launch the project in April 2012.
Chat & Call project.
The main goal of this project is to give children a anonymous way of asking for help or just telling their story by phone or e-mail. This way we hope to reach much more children than the 800 we are working with at the moment.
Laptops wanted!
Mama Alice is looking for (second-hand) laptops, which are still in good condition but not used anymore. These can be used very well in Peru in the educational projects to make online education material available for more children.
Next summer a big group of students from Global Exploration will go to Peru. During their trip they will also visit Mama Alice. They will be able to take the laptops with them. For further information you can contact us on info@mamaalice.com.
Thanks for your effort!
Launderette launched!
Thanks to all the donations we were able to open the first Mama Alice launderette. The launderette also has a home-delivery service for the cleaned laundry. This service improves the city's hygiene.
The launderette is run by 3 guys and 3 mothers who make sure everything runs smoothly.
Working at the launderette improves their social skills. They also learn how to live a more independent live. They are very grateful for the donations and this opportunity.
Situation
Mama Alice’s first project is located in Ayacucho, Peru. This is a region with a large economic gap, partly due to the terror of the Shining Path. Peru is known for its social contrasts, nearly half of the population live below the poverty line. In June 2005 a team of 9 persons provides homework support, sport and games to 90 children. We can see a great learning deficit, but also domestic and sexual violence, diseases and few opportunities on the labor market. Our help extends to the disciplines: health care, psychology, social work, streetcorner work and vocational training. The people in the slums trust us and our method produces good results. In 2008 and 2009 already 800 children participated in the activities organized by 35 employees of Mama Alice. In 2009 the local leadership was transferred to Elba Sahara Zegarra Villa. Being a Peruvian she has been active within the project since then. She reports to the board of Mama Alice in the Netherlands who monitor the implementation and budget.Goal
A new future for all street children worldwide is mama Alice’s dream. Alice is the name of the too early deceased mother of the founder of Mama Alice. The name symbolizes the structure, safety and warmth that street children so desperately need. Our work is built on three pillars: education, welfare and training programs. The children’s mothers (Mamitas) are also involved. Our vision is one of sustainability and long-term thinking. The team in Peru primarily consists of Peruvian employees. We are aiming for a gradual independence of the local leadership. This creates the opportunity for the Mama Alice organization to start a similar project elsewhere in Peru.Main activities
For children we use the three pillars: education, welfare and training programs. In several slums we have a building which is open for all the children. The work there is done by our teachers in cooperation with our nurses and social workers. We provide nursery education and primary education, special education(individual) and secondary education. We take care of the families in the slums by nurses. We also use street workers to reach children we cannot reach easily. In 2010 we began the pilot project of accompanied living in rooms. As vocational training we offer carpentry, metalworking, manicure and pedicure training.
