Hello all,

Thank you very much for your support to Cycling out of Poverty in Kenya. Due to a delay in fundraising your donations will be used for a bicycle credit project in Homabay. This project is a copy of the Mwea project and will be run by our local partner Victoria Boda Boda Co-op Sacco.

Homa Bay is a bay and town on the south shore of Winam Gulf of Lake Victoria, in western Kenya. There is large informal sector with a variety of jobs. The bicycle on credit will improve the situation of the people working in this informal sector, because of savings of transport costs or generating more income with the use of a bicycle.

A group of beneficiaries already started to save for the bicycle. By the of March the first beneficiaries are ready for a bicycle.

Cycle-to-school launched in Kisumu, Kenya
I am excited to inform you that Cycling out of poverty recently launched a cycle-to-school programme in Kenya.

I know bicycles can make a world of difference in Africa, be it in giving income generating opportunities or in giving access to services as eduction end health. Every bicycle which has been distributed through a bicycle credit scheme by Cycling out of poverty will improve the livelihood of 7 people. In Mwea Cycling out of poverty is given out 100 bicycles, that means 700 people in Mwea will benefit.

We raised already 2950 euro with your support, but for a full launch of the project we need 7050 euro more. So play it forward to your friends and collegueas and make it happen.

Nieuwsbrief Cycling out of poverty

African Bicycle Network

Voor de ontwikkeling van onze partnerorganisaties heeft Cycling out of poverty al 3 jaar met steun van I-CE bijeenkomsten kunnen organiseren voor al onze Afrikaanse partners. Deze bijeenkomsten maken het mogelijk dat de organisaties van elkaars ervaringen leren. In juli 2009 kwamen 11 Afrikaanse organisaties (uit Egypte, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Togo, Oeganda, Kenia, Rwanda, Tanzania, Botswana en Zuid-Afrika) samen om een African Bicycle Network op te zetten. (Kijk op onze website http://www.cyclingoutofpoverty/com onder films voor 3 filmpjes over deze bijeenkomst.) Het netwerk zal gaan functioneren als een platform voor het delen van kennis, ervaringen en expertise over hoe niet-gemotoriseerd verkeer het leven van mensen in Afrika kan verbeteren. Cycling out of poverty neemt het secretariaat van het netwerk op zich. In de komende maanden wordt het netwerk vormgegeven: registratie, eigen website enz.

Vacatures

Commissiecoördinator Media/PR (vrijwilligersfunctie).
Vind jij het leuk om te schrijven en vertellen over wat Cycling out of poverty doet? Misschien is het dan iets voor jou om commissiecoördinator Media/PR te worden. Onder de activiteiten van de commissie Media/PR vallen onder andere: voorlichting op beurzen (circa 2x per jaar), content beheren van de website en online communities, nieuwsbrief, PR materiaal, free publicity, etc. Als commissiecoördinator ben je verantwoordelijk voor de coördinatie, wat niet betekent dat je alles zelf moet doen. Je stelt het werkplan op per kwartaal en bekijkt waar we vrijwilligers voor willen aantrekken. Afhankelijk van hoeveel tijd je er zelf instopt neemt de functie circa 10 – 60 uur per maand in beslag. Voor de functie van commissiecoördinator zoeken we iemand die dit voor in ieder geval 1 jaar wil doen.

Commissie coördinator Fondswerving/Acties (vrijwilligersfunctie).
Ben jij iemand die het leuk vind om acties te organiseren (zoals recordpogingen met fietsen) en als contactpersoon te fungeren voor mensen die fondswervende acties ondernemen voor Cycling out of poverty? Geef je dan op voor de functie als commissiecoördinator Fondswerving/Acties. Onder de activiteiten van de commissie fondswerving/acties vallen onder andere: acties initiëren en coördineren, onderhouden contacten online platforms, sponsoring/MVO benaderen, subsidieaanvragen ism coördinator projecten in Afrika, werving commissieleden etc. Als commissiecoördinator ben je verantwoordelijk voor de coördinatie, wat niet betekent dat je alles zelf moet doen. Als commissiecoördinator stel je het werkplan per kwartaal en vooruitblik voor de komende 3 kwartalen op (welke activiteiten, hoeveel werk, wie doet dat of hoe gaan we daar iemand voor vragen). Circa 10 – 60 uur per maand. Voor de functie van commissiecoördinator zoeken we iemand die dit voor in ieder geval 1 jaar wil doen.

Zoals het organiseren van een feestje voor alle mensen die een relatie hebben met Cycling out of poverty? Of het monteren van filmpjes van enkele minuten voor YouTube (waarvan het ruwe materiaal beschikbaar is)? Of deze digitale nieuwsbrieven leuk opmaken? Meld je dan nu aan. Als vrijwilliger werk je samen met de commissie coördinator en andere vrijwilligers aan het ondersteunen van het werk van Cycling out of poverty op het gebied van voorlichting, fondsenwerving of projectbegeleiding.

Empower entrepreneurs in Africa!
Dear players and ambassadors,

Thank you very much for your support to our bicycle projects in Rwanda and Kenya. The fundraising period for the project in Rwanda via the online platform PIFworld has reached its closing date. Unfortunately we were unable to raise the needed funds within the set time frame via PIFworld. Therefore PIFworld will send the donation you made to the project in Rwanda back to your account. The fundraising for this project will continue until we can start the project, but not via PIFworld.

However, we are also raising funds via PIFworld for our bicycle project for small entrepreneurs in Mwea, Kenya. We would be very happy if the players and ambassadors who supported the project in Rwanda could transfer the credits and fundraise support to our project in Kenya. This way your donations will still empower entrepreneurs in Africa with the use of bicycles!

Tourtocht Langszij
De toertocht, georganiseerd door Vrouwenwielrenvereniging Langszij, was een groot succes.

Er reden 181 mannen en vrouwen mee voor een afstand van 80 (stiekem 85km) of 120km. Allemaal samen hebben ze 719,40 euro bijeen gefietst!

Bij deze willen we alle deelnemers bedanken en ook de organisatie van de toertocht. Hopelijk allemaal tot volgend jaar.

Toertocht Langszij, zondag 21 juni 2009
Fietsen voor Fietsen: Vrouwenwielrenvereniging Langszij steunt Cycling out of poverty

VWV Langszij uit Nijmegen organiseert op zondag 21 juni aanstaande voor de tweede maal een toertocht voor wielrenners waarvoor ze vrouwen èn mannen van harte willen uitnodigen. Er kan worden gefietst over twee afstanden: 80 en 125 km. VWV Langszij heeft hun vijftienjarige ervaring als fietsclub ingezet en de mooiste weggetjes en heuvels uitgezocht voor een autoluwe route dwars door de fraaie grensstreek van Nijmegen (Ooij en Reichswald) en het Land van Cuijk. Onderweg is bovendien gezorgd voor een pauzeplaats bij ’t Veerhuis in Oeffelt om even bij te komen van alle inspanningen.

Met een kleine bijdrage steunt u bovendien een goed doel: Cycling out of poverty.

Inschrijven kan op de dag zelf bij start- en finishplek Café Frowijn aan Pontanusstraat 51 te Nijmegen tussen 8 en 10 uur ’s ochtends.

Ik wil bij deze fietsclubs, wielrenverenigingen etc. uitnodigen om mee te doen met deze toertocht.
