Problem statement

Walking days to collect firewood and inhaling unhealthy smoke from wood fires. This is all no longer necessary if biogas is used for cooking. Biogas saves wood and kerosene and delivers fertile manure as residual. Besides that a whole new sector of biogas entrepreneurs and masons occurs.

Goal

Hivos: We don’t normally associate cattle and pigs with clean and hygienic but their manure can be used for clean energy whereby people get a chance on development without climate pollution! In Kenia this project contributes to the realization 24 biogas installations and is part of the larger Africa Biogas Partnership Programme which is realized together with SNV and local organizations. In general a family of more than five persons can be supported in their energy needs from one biogas installation. The overall objective of Kenya Biogas is to contribute to the achievement of the MDGs through the implementation biodigesters as a local, sustainable energy source. The use of Biogas reduces greenhouse gas emissions, saves wood and produces sustainable energy and especially new opportunities and chances for women.

Main activities

Access to energy is essential for development. At the same time, greenhouse gas emissions must be reduced to make development sustainable. Together with our partners we make biogas available to poor communities. Train masons and contractors, organize promotion and marketing, develop credit line with MFI, supervise construction, organize extension on bio-slurry, monitor operation and maintenance

External risks

Kenya is politically not stable and we cannot rule out that political violence will re-surge. The programme would then look for those regions where work can still be done

Founded: 2011

Mission

Hivos is a Dutch non-governmental organisation guided by humanist values. Together with local civil society organisations in developing countries, Hivos wants to contribute to a free, fair and sustainable world. A world in which all citizens – both women and men – have equal access to opportunities and resources for development and can participate actively and equally in decision-making processes that determine their lives, their society and their future. Hivos trusts in the creativity and capacity of people. Quality, cooperation and innovation are core values in Hivos’ business philosophy. Hivos is committed to poor and marginalised groups in Africa, Asia and Latin America. A lasting improvement in these people’s situation is the ultimate measure for the work and efforts of Hivos. One of the guiding principles of our philosophy is strengthening the social position of women.

History

The contemporary Dutch humanist movement originated in 1945 when the organisation Humanitas and the Dutch Humanist League (1946) were founded. These organisations, together with the Vereniging Weezenkas, were involved in the founding of the Humanist Institute for Cooperation with Developing Countries in the 1960s. On 5 January 1968 Hivos officially began with development projects in developing countries.
