Goal

The project of dance4life empowers young people with a schools project made up of four parts: inspire, educate, activate and celebrate. Here on Pifworld we are asking for your support for the first part of the schools project, which inspires the youth to participate in dance4life and become actively involved. The tour is a fun, interactive experience that educates young people and energizes them with enthusiasm to take responsibility in the response to HIV and AIDS. The young people who have participated then have the chance to go on and participate in the following three parts of the dance4life schools project.

Problem statement

Mexico has an estimated 180,000 people living with HIV, with rates rising in the rural areas. Although the government is willing to endorse sexual and reproductive health programmes, such as dance4life, there are conservative parts of the population (both religious and non-religious) that do not endorse such programmes. The government wanted to put condom machines in high schools, but the church is against it.

Main activities

We kick off with the Heart Connection Tour. This is where each school is visited by the dance4life Tour Team – which is no ordinary team, we're talking dancers, musicians, peer educators and young people living with HIV. The Heart Connection Tour is a fun, interactive experience that educates young people and energizes them with enthusiasm to take responsibility in the response to HIV and AIDS. Next they have the opportunity to learn in more detail how to take responsibility by participating in Skills4Life. This is an in-depth programme where they learn more about HIV including: prevention, sexuality, drug abuse, and their rights. They also pick up valuable skills about negotiation (No means No), communication and decision making, which they can apply in their daily lives.

External risks

A thorough review is done in each country before the project is chosen to ensure that the external conditions conform. Project risks can be the successful implementation of the project in schools: dance4life overcomes this by creating partnerships with other organisations, schools, teachers, DJs. Most importantly the dance4life schools project uses the language of young people and connects to them!

  • Start Dancing - Stop AIDS!

After fundraising for Dance4Life in Kenya, I decided to become an ambassador for this year's project in Mexico. Just a few numbers... Every 12 seconds a new person gets infected with HIV occurs, of which half of them are people under 25. Every 15 seconds a person dies of an AIDS-related cause. Dance4Life wants to create awareness for this around the globe and teach young people how easy prevention can be. Their school programs need money of course. Help us and them! Start dancing - Stop AIDS! Thanks!
