Goal

The goal of the project is to create, through a partnership, a Health Information Centre in Pietermaritzburg (KwaZulu-Natal) in South Africa for the purpose of educating the local community on the identification, symptoms and basic care with regards to basic illnesses that effect and affect a community. Another goal of this project is to provide healthcare education and healthcare information to the local people from all walks of life, especially those living in remote areas. Our mission is to empower local people to take care of their own health, the health of their family and of their community. Objectives: 1) To educate caregivers (healthcare workers) in the community with basic healthcare knowledge; 2) To create a train-the-trainer program to train community members and caregivers of the children of South Africa and equipe them with the relevant skills and knowledge; 3) To provide the community with correct information about identification and treatment of basic illnesses; 4) To educate the community using materials and programs created by the World Health Organization; and 5) To run training programs for parents/caregivers that are living in the area of the HICs or attend the HICs as outpatients. Apart from providing training and empowering healthcare workers, the centres will also provide support for parents whose children have been hospitalised for extended periods of time as well as providing stimulation programs for these children.

Problem statement

Many parts of Kwazulu-Natal (Pietermaritzburg) rank among the poorest in South Africa. In general, households in the outlying areas to the northwest and southeast have lower incomes, while those in south western areas tend to have higher incomes. High levels of poverty (more than 60%) and unemployment (at least 38%) make it difficult to pay for health services, which places increasing demands on the public health sector. Despite a significant increase in the number of primary care facilities, the challenges are manifold. There is still a big lack of healthcare information and education possibilities and public health services in these regions to ensure that healthcare information and education is affordable and accessible to everyone. We work in the area mentioned above. Our main aim is to get information regarding individual health to the individuals in the community. The main target group for us are women, both mothers and grandmothers, as they are the primary caregivers in the community. We do not exclude the male sector and we provide training sessions that will benefit them specifically as well. The individuals we are targeting need to understand that healthcare is a human right.

Main activities

1) Set up a Health Information Centre in Grey’s Hospital in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu Natal, South Africa; 2) To provide health education and healthcare information to the general public from all walks of life from Kwa Zulu Natal are; 3) To educate caregivers (healthcare workers) in the community with basic health care knowledge; 4) To educate the community using materials and programs created by the World Health Organization; and 5) Provide guidance and education on basic health care issues impacting the community.

External risks

MKI has set up talks with the local partners about the building where the HICs will be located. There is a risk that the schedule to open the HICs cannot be realized in time, because we don’t know yet exactly how much time it takes to renovate these buildings (to make them suitable for the MKI HICs). We are setting up a working program with the local partners for each building so that we know exactly how much time we need to calculate to set up these Health Information Centres. Recent experience with two already realized HICs have given us valuable knowledge for the planning which we will include in the scheduling of the 2 HICS of this project.
